Recurrent pregnancy loss is classically defined as the occurrence of three or more consecutive pregnancy losses; however, the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) has recently redefined recurrent pregnancy loss as two or more pregnancy losses. The most commonly identified causes include uterine problems, immunologic factors, hormonal disorders, and genetic abnormalities. At Yale Medicine, our Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Program is the only such dedicated program in the state. Recurrent early miscarriages are most commonly due to genetic or chromosomal problems of the embryo, with 50-80% of spontaneous losses having abnormal chromosomal numbers. Structural problems of the uterus can also play a role in early miscarriage. These include PGS and PGD, in vitro fertilization, and surgical procedures to treat conditions that can interfere with pregnancy. Our specialists may recommend trying again to conceive after a recurrent miscarriage.
