You should see an obstetrician as soon as you become aware that you are pregnant. Obstetricians provide care for you and your unborn child during pregnancy and for several weeks following delivery (after you give birth). Seven to eight weeks following your last period, you'll see an obstetrician for the first time. As your due date approaches, you'll see them monthly, bimonthly, and finally weekly. About six weeks after giving birth, your physician will often arrange a postpartum appointment to make sure no new issues have developed. During office visits, physical examinations, and lab tests, the goal of your prenatal care is to identify any potential issues. Your doctor will keep an eye on your postpartum bleeding. Many have also received training in reproductive health for women (gynaecology). You probably won't require an obstetrician if you give birth in a public hospital without any complications as a public patient. But if there are any difficulties or emergencies, an obstetrician will be on hand to handle them.
