A laparoscopy, also called a diagnostic laparoscopy, is a surgical diagnostic procedure that is used to look into the abdomen and other closed areas, including the knees, to inspect the organs. It's a minimally invasive, low-risk surgery that just needs tiny incisions. During an abdominal laparoscopy, a physician looks at the organs inside the abdomen using a device known as a laparoscope. A laparoscope is a narrow, long tube with a high-intensity light and a front-mounted, high-definition camera. An abdominal wall incision is used to install the device. The camera transmits images to a video monitor as it moves. Identifying and diagnosing the cause of pelvic or abdominal pain frequently involves a laparoscopy. When noninvasive techniques are unable to aid in the diagnosis, it is typically carried out. When these tests don't yield enough data or insight to make a diagnosis, a laparoscopy is done. The process can also be used to get a biopsy, or tissue sample, from a specific abdominal organ.
