There are two layers on the uterus inside. The endometrium is the term for the innermost, thin layer. The myometrium is the substantial outer muscle wall. Ten to fourteen days following ovulation, menstruation starts. Ovulation is indicated by regular menstrual cycles in a person who is not taking hormones. Ovarian hormone production leads the endometrium to thicken each month in women who menstruate and ovulate frequently to prepare for a prospective pregnancy. The endometrial lining sheds during the menstrual cycle if the person is not pregnant. Ovarian hormone synthesis essentially ceases at menopause, and the lining stops shedding and developing. During each menstrual period, the uterus releases a certain amount of blood under normal circumstances. Abnormal uterine bleeding is characterized by irregular bleeding patterns or excessive menstrual flow. Any uterine bleeding is seen as abnormal once a woman who is not receiving hormone therapy enters menopause and the menstrual periods have finished.
