When the fetal weight is projected to be less than the 10th percentile for its gestational age, this is referred to as intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). The causes range from chronic disorders or infections in the delivering parent to placental and umbilical cord difficulties. Therapy may include frequent fetal monitoring and testing, as well as early delivery. Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), also known as fetal growth restriction (FGR), occurs when a fetus is smaller than its gestational age should be (number of weeks in the pregnancy). It indicates that the fetus is not developing at the normal rate while inside your uterus. IUGR is defined as weighing less than 9 out of 10 babies of the same age (below the 10th percentile). Fetuses grow at varying rates, and "small size" does not always indicate IUGR. In most cases, tiny-sized fetuses are born small but healthy. In adults, being 5'1" does not make you less healthy than someone who is 6'4". Some birthing parents, on the other hand, have an underlying medical issue that causes the fetus to be tiny for its gestational age.
