As soon as you realise you're pregnant, you should consult an obstetrician. Obstetricians care for you and your baby throughout your pregnancy and for several weeks after birth (after you give birth). You'll see an obstetrician for the first time seven to eight weeks after your last menstrual period, and then monthly, biweekly, and weekly as your due date approaches. Most practises schedule a postpartum visit with your obstetrician about six weeks after giving birth to ensure that no other complications have arisen. Your prenatal care is focused on detecting potential complications during office visits, exams, and lab tests. Your obstetrician will monitor your bleeding after birth. Many have also trained in women's reproductive health (gynaecology). If you have an uncomplicated birth at a public hospital as a public patient, you probably won't need an obstetrician. However, an obstetrician will be available to manage any complications or emergencies.
