Depending on your age, infertility is the inability to conceive after participating in frequent, unprotected sex for anywhere from six months to a year. Not every episode of infertility leads to "sterility"—the inability to ever have children—instead. About half of couples who get medical aid will eventually give birth to a child. Both men and women can experience conception challenges. The fertility of both partners is a problem for 20% of infertile couples. 15% of couples undergo all required testing, yet still cannot determine the root of the problem. This is what we mean by unexplained infertility. Undeveloped testicles, genetic defects, diseases like diabetes, or infections like chlamydia, gonorrhoea, mumps, or HIV can all cause abnormal sperm formation or function. Additionally, swollen veins in the testes known as varicocele might reduce sperm quality.
