Gynecologists and obstetricians both provide care for all aspects of women's health. The two specialities are referred to as OB/GYN collectively, which is one speciality. A residency program and successful completion of medical school are prerequisites for the OB/GYN speciality. Some OB/GYNs will pursue their education in subspecialties such as female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, gynecologic oncology, reproductive endocrinology, and infertility. A doctor can only choose to specialize in one area of the OB/GYN field. They may concentrate on obstetrics, for instance, and only treat patients who need care during preconception, pregnancy, labour, and postpartum. Obstetricians are medical professionals who deliver babies. A doctor who practices as a gynaecologist will see patients for all conditions affecting the female reproductive system as well as other female health-related issues. While a gynaecologist can treat patients before conception and in the first few months of pregnancy, many of them suggest that their patients move to an OB/GYN who specializes in obstetrics.
